Why is There So Much Evil in the World?

All the peoples of the earth
    are regarded as nothing.
He does as he pleases
    with the powers of heaven
    and the peoples of the earth.
No one can hold back his hand
    or say to him: “What have you done?”

-Daniel 4:35 (NIV)

Our God is in heaven;
    he does whatever pleases him.

– Psalm 115:3 (NIV)

For in him all things were created:
things in heaven and on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or
powers or rulers or authorities;
all things have been created
through him and for him.

-Colossians 1:16 (NIV)

We often question God, asking why things are the way they are. Scripture tells us that He created all things and that all things were created by and for Him. God is all-powerful. He does as He pleases and He has every right to do so.

That is an uncomfortable realization, because it means we really have no right to ask Him, “Why is there so much evil in the world?” He, on the other hand, has every right to ask us the same question. God didn’t bring evil into the world…we did, and we are the ones who allow it to continue.

That thought blew me away this morning. Why is there so much evil? Why is there so much abortion, betrayal, cheating, deceit, fighting, hate, injustice, killing, lying, mistrust, persecution, resentment, slander, torture, unfaithfulness, vanity, and war? Because we brought it here…and because we allow it to stay by doing nothing to stop it.

How will you combat evil today?
