The first thing you’ll need to find is a source for good quality vanilla beans. I love Olive Nation’s vanilla beans and through Wednesday, June 15, 2016, Olive Nation is offering 20% off of everything! Use the code “SAVE20” to get the discount. You always get free ground shipping (in the continental US only) on vanilla beans, so this is a great time to get your supplies to make vanilla extract. When I checked the Olive Nation web site just before I published this post I saw that they’re also offering free shipping on orders over $50, so if you want items other than vanilla beans this is a perfect time to get them while you can take advantage of the discounted price and free shipping offer for a larger order. Update: The sale is over, but I’ll keep my eyes open for the next great deal from Olive Nation!

Once you’ve added products to your cart, look for the “free samples” button in the upper right corner of the cart page beneath the “cart” button. I couldn’t find the minimum order to receive a free sample (it’s usually $35) but if you’re ordering lots of vanilla beans or other gourmet goodies you might get the opportunity to select additional vanilla beans, vanilla paste, or a free sample bottle to store your homemade vanilla extract. Be sure to look for the “free samples” button!

I recently bottled up a batch of vanilla extract and have already promised some as gifts. It will be wonderful in cakes, cookies, and frosting, of course, but it’s also a yummy addition to coffee. Just add a splash of homemade vanilla extract to your coffee grounds for a delicious vanilla java. Now that summer has arrived I’ve been enjoying lots of homemade vanilla-mocha iced coffees.

  1. Leigh, this is such a great idea. Is there anything quite like real vanilla extract? It’s the most divine thing. I’ll be trying this for sure. Love, Mimi xxx
