I made a Ginger Bug! (And you can, too!)

If you’ve Liked A Chat Over Coffee on Facebook or if you follow me on Twitter, then you know I’m a wee bit excited over the progress of my ginger bug. After reading these instructions at Wellness Mama and learning that I could make my own ginger ale, I just had to give it a try. I ran out to the nearby International Market for fresh ginger root and immediately started my very own ginger bug.

My husband and daughter have been laughing at me for talking as though the ginger bug is a pet, but I’ve been feeding and caring for it each day, so why not? Doesn’t it look happy sitting on my kitchen counter with my new tile in the background? I took this picture on Monday and noticed that the bug was turning opaque, which is supposed to be a good sign.

Then today (Tuesday) as I was feeding my ginger bug I noticed some tiny bubbles starting to form! Bubbles are a very good sign! I am so excited!

So hopefully very soon I’ll be able to share how I used my ginger bug to make some homemade ginger ale! I’ll keep you posted!

Have you ever made homemade ginger ale or root beer? Do you have any advice for me?

I moderate comments manually but will get them posted as quickly as possible. Please keep your comments kind and if you must disagree please do so without being disagreeable. Rude or inappropriate comments will obviously not be published.

  1. Wow, I wish you fun and much success in your soda making. Have never had the urge to try home brewing. We don’t drink beer or soda. The few times we drink soda is usually for a party or such and we just buy the 2litre bottles. I make hot ginger tea for things like stomach ache or colds.
